Gadolinium is a rare earth metal used in magnetic resonance imaging known as an MRI. One of the most serious side effects of Gadolinium is that it has been known to cause Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis, which is a disorder that causes extensive tissue fibrosis. Tim D. Wilson Investigations is currently researching Gadolinium in order to bring public knowledge of the dangerous side effects which can be developed from the use of this metal in MRIs. Patients who are at risk the most are those with pre-existing kidney disease.

The type of MRI in which Gadolinium is most commonly used is called a Magnetic Resonance Angiography or an MRA. In this particular type of MRI pictures are taken of the blood vessels in the body. The use of Gadolinium in this procedure is to enhance the images of these pictures. In order for Gadolinium to be effective in these procedures the dose has to be administered at three times the approved dose. The problem with administering Gadolinium in this high of a dose is that the body can not extract all of it, causing the patient to become more at risk of serious side effects. One of the biggest concerns about the use of Gadolinium in this procedure is that the Food and Drug Administration has never approved Gadolinium for this type of use, though it is becoming more and more popular in these types of MRI's.

Serious side effects have been linked to the use of Gadolinium. The most common side effect is the development of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis or NSF. NSF is a serious condition and can lead to death if the patient does not immediately receive dialysis. Another disease that has also been linked to the use of Gadolinium based MRI's is Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy or NFD. This is the fibrosis condition which is found in the skin. One statement by the FDA is that there are approximately 215 patients with NSF worldwide. Of the 215 patients approximately 75 of these people had received MRI's with the Gadolinium agent. The FDA also adds that they are not certain why patients with moderate to end-stage kidney disease develop NSF after receiving Gadolinium based MRI's. Some of the top physicians have warned people who have advanced kidney disease not to undergo MRI's where gadolinium is used.

Some of the most common brand names of Gadolinium based dyes used in MRIs include Omniscan by GE healthcare, Prohance by Bracco Diagnostics, OptiMARK by Mallinckrodt/Tyco Healthcare, Magnevist by Bayer/Schering AG/Berlex, and Multihance by Bracco Diagnostics. If you have received MRIs using these dyes you might be at risk.

Some of the early warning signs of NSF or NFD can be burning, swelling, itching, tightening or hardening of the skin. Other signs include stiffening joints, yellow or white spots in the eyes, muscle weakness, and red or dark patches located on the skin. If you suffer from any of these symptoms following the administration of Gadolinium you might be at risk of serious injury.
