Fosamax
is the brand name for the drug Alendronate, which is
manufactured by Merck. Alendronate is in a class of
drugs known as bisphosphonates. Fosamax is prescribed by
doctors in order to treat several bone diseases
including osteoporosis. Due to the loss of appeals for
the patent on Alendronate, several other pharmaceutical
companies are now shipping generic versions of Fosamax
to stores. Fosamax has been linked to several severe
side effects including osteonecrosis and severe
musculoskeletal pain. Tim D. Wilson is currently
investigating and researching Fosamax in order help our
clients receive the latest and best representation in
fighting their case.
Fosamax gained approval by the FDA in 1995. This drug is
used to treat patients with osteoporosis and Paget's
disease. Fosamax falls in a class of drugs called
bisphosphonates which are commonly found in a pill form.
The use of bisphosphonates drugs is to treat women with
osteoporosis who have already experienced menopause.
Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones which increases
the risk of bone fractures. Much stronger versions of
bisphosphonates are used to treat cancer patients in
cases where the cancer has spread to the bones.
Fosamax has been associated with several serious side
effects. One of the side effects associated with Fosamax
is osteonecrosis of the jaw or ONJ. Osteonecrosis of the
jaw is a condition also known as "fossy jaw" and 'dead
jaw". This condition causes the tissue in the jaw to
fail to heal following tooth extractions. Because the
tissue fails to heal, the bone in the jaw is left exposed.
This exposure can lead to infection and even fracture.
This condition can often require surgery and long term
use of antibiotics. Common symptoms of ONJ include
swelling of the gums, loosening of the teeth, numbness,
exposed jawbone, jaw pain, and a heavy feeling in the
jaw.
Another side effect associated with Fosamax is severe
musculoskeletal pain. Musculoskeletal pain is the pain
that one experiences in muscles, joints, and bones. A
2008 health alert was issued by the FDA stating that
Fosamax can cause severe musculoskeletal pain within
days, months, or even years after taking this drug.
The FDA warns doctors to discontinue the use of Fosamax
either permanently or temporarily if this type of pain
is experienced while using it.
If you or someone you know has taken Fosamax, and has
experienced any of these negative side effects, please
contact our office so that we can assist you in winning
your case.
